Exhibition

Being photographed in front of those photographed already? That is more than touristy...

The exhibition of the recovered pictures called “Lost Holiday – Prague helps to find unknown Chinese tourists” was held in Manes Mitte gallery in Prague in summer 2005. The exhibition was acompanied with range of lectures given by philosophers, sinologists, travellers and historians. The audio records of the events are now being processed for you.

There was a unique interactive exhibition of tourist photography held in a prestige Manes Gallery in Prague, from July the 23rd to August the 3rd 2005. Apart from other objects, it was possible to see enlargements of selected pictures of the unknown Chinese tourists.

The aim of the exhibiton was to create a space open for communication about turism and tourist photography. The visitors participated in search for the unknown Chinese tourists by means of the displayed pictures, internet and interactive photo games. The locals and foreign tourists usually don't come much close to each other. There, in the gallery space, the both groups (including tourists from China) were given an opportunity to create a story of looking for the real tourists from China, a story recovered from the unknown tourists pictures.

The story of the lost pictures can easily become anybody else's story – as we all sometimes find ourselves to be tourists and we all have pictures, which are somehow important for us.

  • What does it actually mean to be a tourist?
  • To what extend are we able to find out from a picture who we really are?
  • What is the testimony the tourist photography can give us about the world we live in?
  • Does the loss of the photos and getting them back with the help of other people mean anything for the Chinese tourists?

Your answers to these and other questions can be found in the Lost Holiday movie!
